Sad Day

Looking around today, I put together this list of people who are un-subbing from WAR. Kind of sad as Regis and Pancakez/Omelletez were two primary institutions in inspiring me to start a blog about WAR. On a deeper level, if these people--who are ostensibly the biggest fans of the game--are leaving, then what does that have to say about the state of the game? They are so into it that they burned out? Even if that's the case, it does not bode well for the game overall. It means everyone will burn out eventually, on a shorter candle than we might want to admit. Definitely shorter than what Mythic wants. People have played other MMO's for years and have not burned out.

Like I said. Sad day.

Expectations cause all sorts of dissention. The wait between patches was too much, and the changes they had hoped for were insufficient. It's doubly sad because of the influence they held within the blogging community, and the notice they attracted from developers.

Worry not about those who leave the folds of WAR, or who need to take a break. They have their reasons, driven by the game or life, and should be respected at very least. WAR is evolving, changes are being made all the time. Whether they want to stick through the bad or not is their decision.

Personally, I find the good and run with that. :)

I really think WARs biggest fault is they, admittedly, set out to build a fun "game", rather then building a virtual world.

It shows, there is few places to explore, the world is greatly disconnected, it feels like you are constantly on rails with only one direction to go, you can't even walk up to your capitol cities; characters are also fairly lifeless with few emotes and little interaction with their environment, there is little gathering or interaction with others from your realm, the world feels empty and community is nearly non-existant outside of your guild..

All of this adds up to make WAR feel nothing like a virtual world your character is a part of, which is really where the longtime immersion comes from, in my opinion; looking back at cool places you discovered, things your character accomplished, etc. provides depth to your experience; what do I remember from my shamans 1-39 experience? A bunch of meaningless scenarios =p sure some were fun, but is nothing lasting there.

That's WARs problem in my opinion; if you look past the bugs, lag, lack of polish, poor design choices and all the other baggage, the worst issue is WAR is not a virtual world, its more like team fortress 2, an instanced slugfest you repeatedly engage in for no real purpose. An instanced game will never last as long as a true virtual world players feel a part of.
